First time in human history

A quick item on radio 4 has just reported that observers believe that for the first time in human history the north pole will be free of ice this summer.

Also reported is that analysis of soil from Mars suggests it is similar to alkaline garden soil.  So it could be suitable for growing turnips or asparagus. Could it be that NASA are preparing the lifeboats on good ship Earth? Surely the prognosis here isnt that bad, is it?

Season is well and truly here.

Today I picked the first of my outdoor strawberries.  My rule of thumb is when you are picking both overwintered broad beans and strawberries, its time to stop cutting the asparagus.  The broad beans (red epicure) are just about ready, so I guess the new season is definitely here.
